It's natural that faculty may have questions around how AI might be used in the context of Open Educational Resources. You may be wondering about using AI to help you write or review your work. The considerations and nuances of OER and AI are far beyond the scope of this Intro to OER course, but even so, we do think it important to share a couple of important items as you participate in the OER Stipend Program at Foothill.

CC Licenses and Outputs from AI

"If you create works using generative AI, you can still apply CC licenses to the work you create with the use of those tools and share your work in the ways that you wish. The CC license you choose will apply to the creative work that you contribute to the final product, even if the portion produced by the generative AI system itself may be uncopyrightable. We encourage the use of CC0 for those works that do not involve a significant degree of human creativity, to clarify the intellectual property status of the work and to ensure the public domain grows and thrives."

To clarify: works generated by AI alone without significant human modification and creativity are not generally copyrightable. If/when you use AI to create OERs and don't make significant human contributions to the work, you should use a CC0 license on that OER.

The other critical point is that you should acknowledge if and when you use AI, ESPECIALLY if using the output verbatim. LibreTexts offers a good example of how you can do this:

Know there ARE resources available! If time allows, consider taking the self-paced course, "Navigating the Future: Open Education with Generative AI." You could even earn professional learning credit for completing it by filing with Appendix O2.
