Starting the Meeting

Ways to Launch a Meeting

The host runs the meeting. To start a meeting, you have a couple of options:

It is important to note that a pre-scheduled meeting does not open up and start running by itself at the appointed time. The assigned host must launch the meeting.

Advice:

  • If you are new to hosting live, web-based meetings it's a good idea to rehearse or practice what you want to say and do beforehand.
  • Be mindful of what participants will see behind/around you, and keep the lighting diffused in the room where you are, if possible.
  • Look directly into the webcam whenever you can.
  • Speak a little slower than your usual speech, and speak with clear enunciation.
  • Refrain from saying "Um..." or "Uh..." too frequently.
  • Tell participants that the meeting is being recorded (if you chose to record it), so that the information will be available to anyone who could not attend the meeting.
  • A few seconds of silence while you pause before the next topic or picture is desirable. This allows your participants to digest what they just  heard you say. It also gives them a moment to take notes.
