Plenary - Using Microdata to Identify and Engage High Opportunity Students and Close Equity Gaps

Equity gaps persist in higher education and are even wider online. In this presentation, Mike Smedshammer will share how instructors can survey students and target those who may need extra support early on, when students are most vulnerable and when the Imposter Syndrome feels most acute. Using student-generated microdata, instructors become Warm Demanders by using Canvas video feedback tools to form the instructor-student relationship students need to succeed.

Mike’s presentation is part of the Humanizing Online STEM Academy, a six-week online professional development program provided with funding from the California Education Learning Lab. The Academy has participants work through eight online teaching strategies, two of which will be highlighted in this presentation.

Mike Smedshammer, Ph.D., is the Distance Education Coordinator at Modesto Junior College where he has certified over 300 faculty to teach online. He is a Lead Course Reviewer for California’s Online Education Initiative and recently received the Beacon of Hope award from his college. Many of his workshops and presentations focus on using online tools to address student equity.
