This course is an introduction to the nature of human inheritance and trying to explain the diversity we see among individuals. Together, we will explore the molecular basis of inheritance by looking at the role of genes and our DNA in shaping who we are and how we relate to one another. We will examine genetics on the scale of families, populations, and the entire human race to understand how properties are passed down between generations, and how they have changed across our evolution. With an understanding of how genes affect our bodies and development, we will investigate several diseases that have genetic components such as Huntington’s disease and cancer. Lastly, we will consider possible applications for recent genetic engineering technologies and how their usage will impact our society.
