Welcome to CHEM 25 - The Fundamentals of Chemistry Virtual Classroom

I am looking forward to a productive and rewarding quarter! Fall quarter will be 11 week long to cover lecture and lab materials.

Important Registration Notes
- Continue to follow standard MYPORTAL registration procedures to add/drop the class and to set up your district email account for course communication.

- Our class meetings will be LECTURE (T 5:30 -7:20pm) with asynchronous LABORATORY (3 hours)

Chemistry 25 - Virtual

I am absolutely positive you can be successful in this course! Here is my best advice on how to make this happen:

- Set aside specific hours on certain days of the week to work on this class. Put them in your calendar.
  - Overestimate how much time it will take, at least until you get familiar with the course
  - Do your very best to avoid waiting until the last moment to complete your work.
- Log in to our Canvas course at least three times per week
- Set your Canvas notifications to create alerts for due dates or anything else you think you might forget
- Try to make sure you have a reliable computer and internet access. If you worry this might be an issue, please visit our Virtual Technology Support page
- Please come see me if you're having trouble!
- Don't be shy about using the Ask Questions discussion page. Other students are often very happy to help. And, you may be able to help someone else, too! (This always makes us feel better, also.)

Organization

The course is divided into Lectures and Laboratory (consisting of Hands-On Lab experiments, worksheets and simulations):
I will use a hybrid of synchronous (Zoom meetings) and asynchronous (offline self-paced activities) modality to deliver the course contents.
As a instructional strategy, our classroom will be semi-flipped, in which you will take charge of your own learning with Zoom meeting interaction.

You will be assessed based on completion of required work and demonstration of proficiency in course contents.
I will use Announcements to provide any changes to the course, for example, schedule change, assessment dates, etc..

Requirements

Attendance and participation in the Zoom meeting is a must. Make sure to communicate any internet connectivity issues prior to the start of lab as Zoom will generate attendance report for each session including the duration of your presence.
Participate in Canvas discussion board.
Do the online homework assignments by the due date. Late work is deducted 10% as a late penalty.
Complete all laboratory reports by the due date. Due dates for assignments will be listed below each assignment listing. Pay attention to these dates. Try to turn in work early and complete. Late work is deducted 10% as a late penalty.

Expectation

Students are expected to :

Preview the chapters and the lab instructions before coming to class. Your success in this class is dependent on a discipline approach.
Arrive to class meetings on time. For the lab, follow the lab instructions and schedule to prepare for the experiments and activities. Use office hours to seek help.
Check your email and course Canvas site at least twice a week.
Stay focused, ready to participate in class activities and work with teammates.
Do the suggested homework problems. Turn in reports and assignments on time.
Turn cell phones off and put them away before class meeting begins.
Take advantage of the Learning Resources around you.

I expect you to check the Calendar, Modules, CHEM101 and HOL websites to stay on top of homework and lab due dates.

Zoom is Web conferencing software that allows you to meet as a class or individually with your teacher over the Internet. Meetings are recorded and available for later viewing. Check out the Participant Guide.

CHEM101

CHEM101 Registration Instructions
CHEM101 is compatible with Chrome or Firefox browser.
Your graded assignments will be administered through the CHEM101 Online Homework System. The link is built in the Canvas module. Follow the get started instructions to set up your student account.
- CHEM101 price is $22.95 with option to try out first two weeks free. You need to pay at the end of grace period to continue the subscription.
- If you already have a CHEM101 student account, log in. If you do not have an account, create an account. You would not need to enter course ID. If you are asked, close the browser tab and repeat the steps from Canvas link in get-started guide. Otherwise, your grades might be incorrect!
- Please enter your first name in the profile using the name you would like to be called.
Quizzes will be given on CHEM101, Midterm and final exam will be given on Canvas with web camera turned ON while you attend the Zoom meetings. If you are not able to make the scheduled exam, it is your responsibility to make advance arrangement with the instructor.
Lab topics will be included in the exams and your instructor will make announcement.
In-class group exercises will be given on CHEM101 and counts towards Participation grade.
During the second half of the quarter, you will be given a mini-paper assignment in which you submit an essay plus a short video presentation to share with classmates.
To access the CHEM101 homework regularly, click on module link on Canvas. You do not need to sign in again after linking your accounts.
For waitlist students who can view but not participate in Canvas, a temporary CHEM101 course will be available during the first 2 weeks until you are officially added to the roster.

Hands-On Lab Kits for At Home Experimentation

HOL is a cloud-based e-learning platform specially designed to provide a tactile lab experience for distance learners. With a set of selected kits that will be mailed to you at the end of week 2, you will complete the experiments at home with online lab instructions and report system.

American Chemical Society “How To Succeed in Online Classes During COVID-19 Pandemic”

In a flipped classroom, most of the “Learning” will be your responsibility. Here’s how I recommend you approach the “lecture” portion of the class. Prepare in advance!

Before the Zoom lecture:

1. Check the Calendar and Canvas to see what is coming for the week.
2. Preview the lecture slides in conjunction with your textbook.
3. Make a reasonable assessment of what topics you find challenging. Look at the Slides, focusing on the more challenging topics.
4. Get any questions you may have organized. Questions should reference specifically the slide(s) that pertain to your questions. Check the Canvas discussion board. Look for answers to your questions(s) or post your question(s).

During the Zoom lecture

Have access to the practice problems when the Zoom lecture begins.
Ask your questions and work on the practice problems.

After the Zoom lecture
1. Review any slides/annotations/practice problems that may still be unclear.
2. Begin the Mastering Chemistry homework online.
At the end of the week
1. Make a final review of the chapter content and get ready for the next week.
2. Review the Zoom lecture recording of the lecture to help with anything you may have missed.
