Course Synopsis:

Course Content

This is a 5-unit course covering basic principles of organic chemistry and biological chemistry. Topics include organic chemistry nomenclature, functional groups, and an introduction to the structure and properties of carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, proteins, and enzymes. An overview of metabolism will also be given.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to describe the general structure of carbohydrates, fatty acids, amino acids and proteins, nucleotides, and nucleic acids. Students will know the roles of these bio-molecules in the body.
  2. Students will understand the chemistry of common metabolic processes.
  3. Students will be able to describe DNA replication, transcription and translation.
  4. Students will be able to name simple organic compounds and recognize and name functional groups in an organic compound. By recognizing a functional group, students will be able to determine general reactivity and write reactions to show that reactivity.

Grading:

Your final grade in this course is determined using both lecture (75%) and lab (25%) components totaling up to 100%:

Description of Assignments:

Lecture (75%):

Online Homework (25%)

Homework assignments are submitted online through Mastering Chemistry. Homework due dates will be posted online and are generally due around exams. NO credit will be given for assignments submitted after the Mastering Chemistry cutoff dates.

Exams (50%)

There are one midterm exam and one final exam. Each exam is worth 25%. While the final will focus on the material covered after the second midterm, it is cumulative requiring mastery of material covered throughout the entire course. No advance or make up exams will be given. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Midterm: Friday, May 14

Final Exam: Monday, June 21

Lab (25%):

Pre-Lab

Online pre-lab questions are submitted through Mastering Chemistry and due at 11:59 PM on the day of each lab (ie. Mondays). Pre-labs ensure that you are prepared for the lab. Students who fail to submit the pre-lab on time may not participate in the lab

In-Lab

Since this course is asynchronous, students will watch lab videos and/or complete worksheets on their own and submit their work on CANVAS. Each new lab will be available on Mondays. Students will have one week to complete each lab assignment.

Post-Lab

Online post-lab questions are submitted through Mastering Chemistry. To demonstrate understanding of the experiment, students must complete a post-lab assignment. Post-lab assignments are due at 11:59 PM one week from the day of each lab is scheduled.

Other Resources and Information:

Academic Integrity:  All students are expected to follow Foothill College’s Academic Honor Code.  Academic Integrity will be taken extremely seriously in this course.  Any cases of plagiarism and/or cheating will be reported and will result in a failing grade for that particular assignment and/or the course.
