📘 S2. Course Description

Examination of the principles and functions of business and the objectives and operations of the corporate and small business
managerial decision-making process. The course examines the relationship between businesses and consumers, internal and
external stakeholders and how those relationships impact business operations. The course topics include the impact of
globalization on business operations, and how economic, political, legal, and social issues impact business operations. In
addition, the course covers basic business and corporate ethics and social responsibility topics.

Foothill GE: Area 4: Social and Behavioral Sciences

Transfer Credit: UC, CSU.

Advisory: Not open to students with credit in BUSI 22H or 52.

Learning Objectives:


By the end of this course, students will be able to:

A. Generally:

          1. Describe the basic nature and operation of formal business organizations, the functions and responsibilities of the
            businessperson, and the development of current knowledge in business administration.
          2. Examine the full range of international business challenges in finance, trade, marketing, and management.
          3. Explain the importance, complexity and interrelationship of the economic, political and social environments within which
            business persons must pursue their careers and develop social responsibilities.
          4. Develop a framework for further study of business and career guidance
          5. Describe the changes taking place in the American business economy and understand their significance
          6. Demonstrate a global sensitivity to management issues such as outsourcing and contract manufacturing.
          7. Develop decision-making skills and to think critically and communicate effectivelyCourse Content

B. Content:

          1. The nature and environment of business, career opportunities, organizational development.
          2. Ownership, management, and organization of formal organizations including small business, publicly held corporations, private companies and franchising operations.
          3. Production, purchasing, location and layout, marketing (domestic and international), retailing, and advertising as it affects the business enterprise.
          4. Personnel functions including selection, training, compensation; role of unions and labor legislation.
          5. Finance, financial institutions, stock and commodity exchanges; risks and insurance as they affect the economy.
          6. Quantitative controls for decision making: accounting and financial statements, business statistics, data processing, budgeting, and forecasting.
          7. Legal and regulatory environment of business, taxation, regulation of competitive business; business ethics.
          8. Consumerism and future trends and influences on business.
          9. The international arena.
          10. Equal employment opportunity EEO.
          11. International dimensions of organizational behavior.
          12. Organizational behavior in perspective.

Student Learning Outcomes:

      • SLO1: Critically analyze, evaluate, and interpret business problems and solutions in the context of evolving technologies and business environments.

Course Type: This is HYBRID; Partly in class, partly ONLINE - the online portion is ASYNCHRONOUS course with no in-person nor online fixed-scheduled meetings.

Access at https://foothillcollege.instructure.com/ for course materials, announcements, grades, and communications. Check regularly for updates.

  2. MyBizLab (Access Pearson) Access: For assignments, eBook, and exams
  3. Software Access: Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
  4. Optional: least a couple browsers, a couple of AI chat apps, and others

📝 S8. Course Assignments

📋 Assignment Types: (Tentative, not yet finalized)

  • Check-Ins (Chk-In): Weekly engagement check-in Posting in the current Module due Tuesdays at midnight
  • Class Participation (CP): Minimum 2 substantive discussion posts per week, regardless of how many chapters or however many discussion threads are shown in the current module (s).
  • Reading Checks (RC): 10-20 questions per chapter, unlimited attempts/time
  • Homework (HW): 6-10 problems per chapter
  • Exams: 2 Midterms + 1 Final Assignment (Final Exam or Team Project/Paper)
    • Final Exam (comprehensive) << default final assignment if none explicitly selected 
    • Team Project: Public company financial statement analysis (replaces final exam, all team members earn same score as earned on the single team submission - with one exception that will be discussed in the team project instructions)

⚠️ Important Assignment Notes:

  • The DEFAULT policy on late assignments is "No late assignments accepted." This policy mostly pertains to the exams, the team project, and any assignment not automatically scored by Access Pearson. For Access Pearson assignments an automatic 10% penalty per day will apply (up to 3 days)
  • Use "low score drops" strategically for technical issues, illness, or emergencies
  • Assignments submitted via Access Pearson or Canvas only (not email)

        • Reading Checks: 24%
        • Simulations: 8 %
        • EBBs: 18 %
        • Midterm Exams (2): 20 %
        • Final Exam: 19% or Group Project: 19%
        • Class Participation: 10%

Grading Scale:

    • A: 93-100% | A-: 90-92.99%
    • B+: 87-89.99% | B: 83-86.99% | B-: 80-82.99%
    • C+: 77-79.99% | C: 70-76.99%
    • D+: 67-69.99% | D: 63-66.99% | D-: 60-62.99%
    • F: Below 60%

📈 Grade Monitoring: Check Canvas Grades regularly. Use the provided Excel grade calculator for accurate tracking. No extra credit is scheduled. Grades are not curved.

📋 S10. Course Policies

🎯 Key Policies:

    • Attendance: Regular attendance (logins per week) is crucial. Missing more than 7 days worth of class may result in being dropped
    • Drop and Withdrawal Deadlines: administrative deadlines are your responsibility; pay special attention to the DROP and WITHDRAWAL DEADLINES -- Refer to our class calendar, but you must check that I have the correct date -- it is best to check with your counselors or the college website.
    • Academic Integrity: All work must be original. Team collaboration allowed on specified assignments
    • Technology and AI: Use in class should be course-relevant. AI is fully encouraged to be used.

📤 Drop/Withdrawal Policy:

Students may withdraw without academic penalty until the end of the 10th week. It's your responsibility to officially withdraw if necessary. Non-participation for 7 consecutive days may result in being dropped for inactivity.
